CAREERS OFFICER
WORK AT PETONE
The careers officer of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Mr. J. G. Green, reports that during the year the college had been associated with the Wellington Youth Centre, and, although the scheme was still in process of development, some very good work had been done. The careers officer was the connecting link between the college and the Youth Cen-> tre, and pupils who wished advice in connection with the choice of a vocation or were seeking a position in their chosen vocation had the benefit of the help of the expert staff in Wellington.
Approximately 15 pupils who were unable to secure positions were well placed through the Youth Centre, and advice had been given to, and information obtained for, 40 or 50 parents and pupils.
The Youth Centre hoped to be able to issue, either at the end of this year or the beginning of 1939, a booklet for all children about to leave school on "Choosing a Career," and during 1939 it was expected that, as pupils and parents became better acquainted with the facilities available, even further assistance would be able to be given.
A further development expected ir\ 1939 was more "follow-up" work by officers of the Labour Department to ensure that young people in employment were happy at and suited to their work, and were working under the best of conditions. '
