ORDINARY BLOKES
(By LEO.)
SOME people lead fantastic lives And do not squabble with their, wives, Nor do they smoke, nor do they drink, Nor swear, procrastinate, or wink At ladies other than their wives— Some people lead fantastic lives. We do not ask, we do not claim Such qualities to gild our name, We do not strut, nor cry aloud That we're above the common crowd, We do not wish to see our name In print, thanks, if it's all the same. Some people have a funny craze For living in the public gaze— As who would say, "Lo, here I am, Sir Oracle! A pound of jam Plastered on me with lavish hand Is something I can understand." In modesty, we think we're brainier Than to have such a megalomania; And, armoured in our self-respect, We walk the low road, unbedecked With laurels, honours, or suchlike-^ We push a pram, we ride a bike. We like a humble pot of beer, We like a pay-day drawing near, We like our homely, ancient pipe, A dish of tea, a plate of tripe, A cobber, and a bob or two To splash, at times—sez me, sez you. We do not aim to give offenct To any, or to make pretence At being other than we are, But, as we are, to travel, far . From useless strife—to spend our Jays In walking peaceful, well-trod ways. We don't mind helping him who lacks With an ungrudging spot of taxSo, if we're lucky, Mr. Nash May ease us of a spot of cash— We only hope that^he won't be Too hot on us—sez you, sez me. We dry the dishes, wash the dog, Cut kindling wood, or saw a fog, ■. > We turn the wringer for the wife, And take it as a part of life— Let us not skite—we will not shine Again in 1939.
