SERVICE ENDING

MR. A. JURISS TO RETIRE

Thirty years' continuous service with the Justice Department will be terminated tomorrow, when Mr. A. Juriss, of the staff of the Lower Hutt and Petone Magistrates' Courts, is to retire .on superannuation. Before joining the Department's staff, Mr. Juriss served eight years in the New Zealand Permanent Artillery in Wellington and Lyttelton. He was first attached to the Oamaru Courts, and later served in the Supreme Courts at Dunedin and Christchurch, and the Magistrate's Court, Dunedin. He is returning to Dunedin to spend his retirement I

In his youth, Mr. Juriss was an allround . sportsman. He represented Canterbury and Otago at championship athletic meetings, and on one occasion broke all Dominion records for putting the shot and throwing the hammer. His record as an oarsman with the Lytteltbn Rowing Club was a brilliant one. He was single sculls champion for some years, and won many double sculls events with the late Mr. R. F. Crosby.

One of the high lights of his sporting career was the winning of the champion single sculls in the Christchurch jubilee regatta at Lyttelton. With Mr. Crosby he won the double sculls and pairs iri the same regatta. He was also an accomplished boxer, and had he continued in this- sphere would at least have come close to winning the New Zealand heavyweight title. He holds the gold medallion of the Royal Humane Society.
