ST. MARK'S SCHOOL

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

St. Mark's Church School closed

the year yesterday, when the annual

prize-giving took place in the Parish Hall. The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, pre-

sented the prizes, the vicar, the Rev. N. F. E. Robertshawe, presiding. Mrs. Holland was presented with a bouquet by one of the pupils.

Also on the platform were Mrs. Robertshawe, Miss A. A. Holm (principal of ..he school), Mr. G. W. Balthrop (first school secretary), Mr. Ohlsson (present school secretary), and Mrs. Ohlsson, Mrs. Arthur Mack, and Mrs. Lewis (members of the school committee).

The year had not Been an easy one for the staff., said Mr. Robertshawe, but despite sickneps the work had progressed, and the school itself had flourished. He paid a tribute to Miss Holm, who, he said, kept abreast of the modern educational developments. "There are probably few primary schools with such up-to-date equipment as St. Mark's has," he said. He thanked the many people who had helped the school, specially the principal of Wellington College for the use of school grounds, the Brougham Hill Tennis Club for the use of its courts, the staff, visiting teachers, and the school secretary, Mr. Ohlsson.

Miss Holm's report recorded progress, despite the winter ailments. The school grounds had been improved, and a new play -area filled in and fenced. The year had been memorable because the school had celebrated its twenty-first birthday. The report acknowledged with thanks the gifts given by many friends during the year. The debt on the school assembly hall was paid off, and there was still sufficient money to paint the school. A very successful bazaar was held, and the report thanked parents of past and present pupils and many other friends. The activities included an entertainment for 300 orphan children, and help given to the Bishop's Fighting Fund.

Before presenting the prizes Bishop Holland congratulated Miss Holm on her excellent report. He enjoyed coming to the St. Marks' prize-giving each year, he said, because the report was always such a splendid record of progress.

During the evening the pupils sang the school song and carols.
