SHIPLOAD OF JEWS

OPPOSITION IN SYDNEY

TOO MANY TO ABSORB

(Received November 2, 12.30 p.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day,

The Jewish Welfare Society is strongly opposed to the proposal that a special steamer with only Jewish migrants should leave Germany for Australia in December. The society has cabled its London office asking that steps be taken to check the proposal.

While the society is desirous of helping as many distressed Jews as possible, it considers that migrants should be carefully selected and that it would be very difficult to absorb a large shipload at once. The correspondent of the Australian Associated Press in Berlin reported by cable yesterday that newspapers were carrying advertisements from the North German Lloyd Company announcing that the steamer Berlin would make a special trip to Australia from Bremen on December 19 with only Jewish emigrants, calling at Melbourne and Sydney. The fare would be £75.
