EPSOM SAVAGING EPISODE

(Received October 3, 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The "Herald,"/commenting on the A.J.C. Derby, says that Nuffield proved himself the best stayer. The brilliance he showed in taking the lead half a mile from the post and in stalling off a determined claim by Aeolus empha- ] sised his all-round excellence. The I time, which has Jaeen excelled only by { the great Phar Lap, enhanced the merit of his performance. Discussing the Epsom savaging incident, the "Herald" says: "King's Head contributed to his own defeat by Hamurah in the last Doncaster Handicap by savaging that mare in the finish. On Saturday St. Constant helped King's Head by savaging Bobby when the latter was at the top of his run. Nightguard was twice kicked before the start of the Epsom, his failure to come on in the straight being consistent with the behaviour of a horse soured by such happenings." The "Herald" says that Royal Chief's victory over Avenger in the Plate was one of the grandest efforts seen in a weight-for-age race at Randwipk. Over the last three furlongs Royal Chief received a series of checks, and a furlong from the post he seemed hemmed in hopelessly. But, after being pulled] practically to his haunches and taken wide, he caught Avenger with a brilliant spurt and won decisively.
