BRITISH REFERENCES
ENORMOUS INCREASE IN POWER OF NAZI STATE
(Received October 3, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, October 2. Many prominent people, including Lord Meston and Lord Cecil and a number of members of the House of Commons, have issued a statement referring to the Czech sacrifice. It is claimed that the enormous increase in the power of the Hitlerite State has rendered the defence of France and Britain more difficult. It is added: "Czechoslovakia's surrender has brought us within reach of a Power which hitherto scorned the principles of morality and justice on which the Western civilisation is founded." The Archbishop of Canterbury, at a peace thanksgiving service, which was broadcast, referred to the bitter thought of Czechoslovakia's sacrifice. The Archbishop renewed the call to religion and emphasised the value of magnanimity in politics, pointing out that Britain's refusal to practise it had led to the rise of the present German regime.
