SANGUINARY FIGHTING

The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Hankow this morning:— Enemy troops to the number of 40,000, following the Juichang-Wuning highway, strongly attacked our positions, but after four days of sanguinary fighting,/ we defeated the. enemy, who sustained over 6000 casualties. "South-west of Shangcheng we simultaneously attacked the enemy both in front and in the rear and severely defeated them, the enemy sustaining from 4000 to 5000 casualties. On the Juichang-Wuning highway, following up our victory, we recaptured Maanshan, Chukiatong, and other important positions, the enemy fleeing in disorder. We also recaptured Shuanchen which had been in the enemy's hands for the last ten months, the enemy retreating to Wuhu."
