MODERATE TEMPERATURES

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to fresh north-westerly to westerly winds. Weather fair to fine, with modei rate temperatures. j The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for north-westerly winds in places, particularly on the east coast, but westerlies to south-westerlies will predominate. Winds will be strong at times in exposed positions, but for the most part they will be light to moderate. In eastern districts the weather will be mainly fair, but elsewhere it will be changeable with passing showers, more especially on the west coast of the South Island. Temperatures will be moderate. During the weekend an anticyclone was centred over the Auckland peninsula, while a series of slight westerly depressions was passing in the south. The last of these crossed the South Island last night and winds, which during the weekend were mainly north-westerly, had changed to the south-west by this morning to as far north as Cook Strait. Winds on Saturday were light to moderate, but yes--1 terday they were strong in places I south of Taranaki, the force of a moderate gale being reached about Cook Strait. Apart from some light rain in the . King Country and in South Westland, Saturday was" a fine day in most places. It was raining this morning in Taranaki, and the south-westerly change as it passed up the South Island last night gave some showers in Otago and Southland also. Auckland had a fine and mild weekend with relatively little cloud, but the weather this morning was overcast. The wind has been between west and south-west and light in force. The i maximum and minimum temperatures j on Saturday were 64.1 and 46.6 degrees, and on Sunday 63.4 and 1.3 degrees. Wellington had ideal weather on Saturday, it being the warmest day experienced this spring. The wind was a light north-westerly, and 9.4 hours of bright sunshine were recorded. A light and misty drizzle, amounting to one point of rain, fell during Saturday night. The weathar yesterday was cloudy and windy, there being frequent gusts from the north-west of over- 60 miles an hour, but the sunshine totalled 6.4 hours. The wind continued to blow strongly last night,* with many gusts over 50 miles an hour, but after 7 a.m. today the wind quickly fell away to a light one and the weather became beautifully fine again. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Saturday were 67.5 and 51.7 degrees, and on Sunday 61.2 and 52.4 degrees. Christchurch had a very warm weekend, with maximum temperatures of 67.2 and 65.1 degrees on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Saturday was fine and sunny, but Sunday was overcast. The wind' was a light one between north-east and north-west, but there was a change last .night to a moderate south-westerly and the weather this morning was fine and sunny. Although there was a light frost of 2.9 degrees on Saturday night, the nights were comparatively mild, with minimum temperatures of 45.1 and 49.1 degrees on Saturday and Sunday respectively. In Dunedin on Saturday morning it was cloudy, but the afternoon was very warm and sunny with almost no wind. Sunday was also warm, but with only intermittent sunshine. The wind was a moderate one from the north-west, but when it changed to the south-west last night there were heavy showers and a thunderstorm, the rainfall amounting to 41 points. The weather this morning, however, was fine and sunny again.
