WILD ENTHUSIASM

A MEMORABLE SCENE

POIGNANT EXPRESSION OF

GRATITUDE

(British Official Wireless.) (Received October 1, 1 p.m.)

RUGBY, September 30,

Great crowds packed in Downing Street and Whitehall kept up their spirits in a downpour of rain by singing and shouting wartime songs and slogans. On emerging from the Palace the Premier and his wife were met again by the cheers of the assembled people and their car made a triumphal progress towards Downing Street Outside No. 10 on the. arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlain scenes of the wildest enthusiasm were enacted. The police were compelled to make repeated appeals to the crowds through loud-speakers to secure sufficient space for the passage of the car. Downing I Street, which has been the scene of many memorable demonstrations, has rarely, if ever, witnessed a more poignant expression of the people's enthusiasm and gratitude for an action which brought them peace and relief from nervous tension than that which occurred tonight when Mr. Chamberlain came home. His car advanced slowly through a tumult of j cheers. As he stood in the doorway of No. 10 the crowd sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and cheered again and again. Before dispersing, the crowd sang the National Anthem. MRS CHAMBERLAIN CONGRATULATED. Remarkable scenes occurred in Downing Street shortly after noon, when Mrs. Chamberlain left her house

for a walk in the park. An immense crowd had assembled, and time after time cheered her.. She smilingly waved her acknowledgments, but the crowd pressed closer and as she proceeded many of them stepped forward and shook hands and congratulated her on her husband's successful mission. A meeting of leading Ministers took place this morning at the Cabinet offices and Lord Halifax and Sir John Simon, as they proceeded along Downing Street to attend the meeting, were cheered by bystanders.
