MRS. CHAMBERLAIN CHEERED
LONDON, September 30,
Newsboys, rushing to Whitehall with late editions of the evening papers and crying: "Peace, peace!" brought.hundreds of people running to Downing Street.
People bought the papers, took one look, and dashed to No. 10, where a crowd from end to end of the street was soon shouting: "We want Mrs. Chamberlain." A few minutes earlier she had left for a special prayer service. A large crowd waited at . the door of the church after the service, Mrs. Chanjberlain bowing and smiling in response to prolonged cheering. By the time her car arrived, the crowd had swelled to thousands. Women in tears jumped on the running-board, grasping her hand. Announcements of the Munich agree-' merit were greeted with terrific cheering at London theatres, where three cheers were frequently given for the King and Mr. Chamberlain. London's night crowds have not revealed such emotion since the war.
The 8.8.C. unprecedentedly broadcast the glad news at 2.30 a.m.
Comment confirms the declaration of the "Evening Standard" that the "heart and hope of the British people are with Mr. Chamberlain in Munich today."
The "Star" describes the public mood as one of solemn relief,
