The parallelogram on the southern yardarm (left) shows that a ship is -coming from the south or east and those on the northern yardarm indicate arrivals from the northior west. The flag at the mast* head is the flag-letter "M," and means that one of the ships belongs to tlie South Taranaki Steam Ship Company. The black ball at the foot of the mast shows that one of the ships is owned by the Union Company, and it is about to be raised to indicate from which direction she is coming.
