CANADIAN WELTERWEIGHT

JOHNNY FOSTER LOSES ON POINTS TO CALTAUX

Making his debut in a New Zealand ring, the Canadian welter-weight Johnny Foster did not make a particularly impressive showing in his 12----round bout against the Aucklander Vie. Caltaux, which was the principal of two professional contests staged recently in the Dunedin Town Hall by the Otago Boxing Association. Caltaux scored a decisive win on points, states a Dunedin exchange.

Foster began well, and, although Caltaux forced the fighting in the earlier stages, the Canadian had his opponent down for the count of seven, a stumble on the part of Caltaux helping him to a certain extent. When Caltaux rose Foster went in and connected with a beautiful left to the body, and down Caltaux went again, this time for nine. Foster has a solid punch in either hand, but he was concentrating mainly on the body, which to a large extent proved his undoing. Caltaux did the greater part of the leading throughout, and after the first couple of rounds, during which the Canadian gave the impression that he would do very much better than he actually did, he had matters pretty much his own way. The house was fairly well filled, and the. crowd rose to its feet when the nuggety Caltaux in the third round rushed in and sent his man to the ropes under a solid barrage of heavy punches, which culminated with two rattling lefts to the jaw. CALTAUX AGGRESSIVE. For the next few rounds Caltaux continued to force the fighting, and was scoring well to the head, although Foster .managed to ride many of his heavier blows and at times succeeded by smart footwork in making the Aucklander miss badly. Caltaux then commenced to take, things a little more quietly, but his attack by no means lacked vigour, and on the rare occasions when the Canadian did come in he was smashed off again by his op- J ponent's jarring rights and lefts. Caltaux had a narrow escape v#hen Foster stabbed a short and powerful right to the Solar plexus. The Aucklander went down for four, and when he came up again Foster tried hard to measure him off for the coup de grace, but Caltaux was too wary and dropped into a smother. Blighting coolly, Foster was watching for another chance at the body, but Caltaux .survived the round, and came out in the next to sail in and drive his man all round the ring under a. veriable flurry Of gloves. Towards the end of the round there were plenty of gloves flying on both sides, but very few of them were connecting.

In the tenth round Caltaux was again on the attack, but while he was scoring well, many of Foster's punches were short, especially those for the head. Caltaux's pad dropped in his mouth and caused him a little bother, but Foster stood off, and when all was clear again the Aucklander rattled his man with two lefts flush to the chin, and followed up with a snappy right cross to the side of the head. The Canadian appeared to be tiring in the latter stages of the bout and, taking full advantage of the fact, Caltaux did not let up for an instant, and pounded him all around the ring. Foster managed to slip a good many dangerous punches, but he did not come back with a counter, being content mainly to keep out of trouble! In the final round he did stage a rally and succeeded in getting in a stiff right to the body, but the effort was short-lived and when the final gong sounded CaJtaux was doing all the fighting.
