WOMEN'S PROVINCIAL GOLF

. (From "The Post's" Representative.) WANGANUI, September 30. The Wanganui women's provincial golf championship concluded on Thursday in pouring rain, an Unfortunate ending to an otherwise enjoyable gathering. The weather on the preceding days had been delightful. There were record entries, including two Tasman Cup players—Mrs. R. Ful-lerton-Smith and Miss V. Fleming. There were a number of surprises, and a great deal of very excellent golf was witnessed. Mr. R. Cook, of Mangamaku (Wanganui), won the tournament by defeating Miss V. Fleming in [ the final at the eighteenth hole. Three [years ago Mrs. Cook won the same I title, defeating Mrs. Russell Grace in a marathon finish at the twenty-first. Gonville. Croquet Club. The first croquet club to open in Wanganui for the 1938-39 season was the Gonville, and a glorious spring day favoured the occasion. The lawns, set with many varieties of shrubs, looked their best, and many visitors j and members and representatives of other clubs were present. The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, declared the courts open, and Mrs. Uttley, president of the club, made a brief speech. Mrs. Rogers hit the first ball and was presented with a shoulder spray. Croquet competitions of all kinds passed a pleasant afternoon. Visit of President. Miss Mildred Trent, Christchurch, Dominion president of the National Council of Women, visited Wanganui on Wednesday night and addressed a large number of the Wanganui branch of the council. Miss A. C. Tizard, the Wanganui president, presided. Miss Trent gave an interesting resume of the work accomplished by women's organisations since women were granted the franchise. After the address Mrs. A. H. McLean entertained the executive at supper. Miss Trent was the guest of Mrs. Cresswass while at Wanganui, and Miss Tizard stayed at the Vicarage with Mrs. Young. Spring Show. On Wednesday afternoon the club room of the Wanganui Women's Club was gay with, bowls, baskets, and numerous floral arrangements on the occasion of the annual spring show held by the garden circle. Mrs. Aubrey Cane and Mrs. C. H. E. Rhodes were the judges. Among those who won prizes were Mesdames R. C. Earle, C. C. Baldwin, D. L. Blyth, D. Lilburne, L. B. Barron, T. Mitchell, S. Smith, A. H. McLeod, and P. Paul. Twelfth Birthday. Representatives of most organisations in the city were present in the W.D. rooms on Wednesday afternoon to honour the twelfth birthday of the Wanganui branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs. Susan Scott, president of the branch, briefly traced the growth of the movement in the district, saying that there were now eleven branches in the Wanganui Provincial District. Mrs. J. C. Wickham. Dominion president of the Women's Division, spoke of the new rest home at Palmerston North, lately given to the division by the New Zealand Sheepowners' Association. Messrs, T. Currie, J. B. Cotterill, M.P., j and W. J. Rogers spoke briefly. • The two-tier birthday cake was made by Mrs. G. McDougall, and iced by Mrs. A. McNab and Miss Stringfellow, and | adorned with candles and favours ! the Women's Division colours. Items were given by Mrs. D'Arcy Preston and Mrs. F.
