SNOOKER

LOCAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Further games in the first' round of the Wellington Provincial Amateur Snooker Championship were conducted' last night at Billiards, Limited, showrooms when F. Wells (G.P.O. Social and Literary Club) scored a victory over C. Peek (Paramount). J. Lee (Victory) had rather a comfortable win over J. Muir (Queen's) and D. Phillips (Paramount) beat M. H. Ready (St. Patrick's Old Boys). The first game, between Wells and Peek, though closely contested throughout, did not produce spectacular play, both contestants preferring to keep the game tight and yield nothing in position. The matches were very closely contested throughout and Peek took the black in the first game to lead 42-38. This small lead he could not increase greatly throughout the second game and Wells, who was only a few points behind, collected the last black, winning the game by 97-92. j The second game was an easy victory for Lee, who defeated Muir by a total of 121-56. The former proved consistently good and achieved several useful breaks, while Muir appeared unsettled throughout. Phillips, who was making his first championship appearance, potted very well against Ready and in the first game obtained a 69-46 advantage. The pace was not maintained through the second game, and after some desultory sparring Ready played strongly. Phillips, however, responded with a useful run and won 133-76. All the games were controlled by Mr. J. Meldrum. There will be no game at 7 p.m. tonight as H. Looner (Victory) wins by default from R. Duck (Miramar), who j is indisposed through illness. The first j game will begin at 8 p.m. when R. j Whitford (Paramount) will meet T. Garbett (Windsor). At 9 p.m. A. ISmethurst (Wellington Working Men's Club) will play M. Knigge (G.P.O. Pastimes),
