Kecruiting for the anti-aircraft defences, the Armjrs and the Royal Air Force, and the mobilisation of the Fleet are continuing at full speed. Municipalities have been advised in no circumstance to delay air-raid precautions. German visitors continue to call at the Embassy for visas. It has become impossible to rent a house or a cottage in the nearer counties, where thousands have been dwelling for the last few days. Houses have gone to the highest bidders after fierce competition. Many private schools have closed down indefinitely, and parents are taking their families to the country. The liner Queen Mary left for New York today with a record of 2000 passengers, most of whom are Americans going home. Nearly 10,000 naval reservists, many accompanied by their wives and children, have arrived at Chatham, in response to the1 mobilisation order1. There was not the slightest halt. Thousands of men and women queued up at the enlistment bureaux in London throughout the day. The Air Ministry has lowered the age-limit of the balloon barrage corps to 25, and is appealing urgently for recruits within a few days. The Board of Trade, in appealing against food-hoarding, gives an assurance that supplies are adequate and well controlled.
