LADIES' GOLF

MIRAMAR TOURNEY

MRS. CROMBIE WINS

After playing consistent golf throughout the tournament, Mrs. D. Crombie (Wellington Club) turned on fine golf to beat Mrs. H. Pearce (Miramar Club) in the final of the Miramar ladies' open golf tournament yesterday afternoon, oy-6 and 5. Mrs. Crombie,-who was a member of the New Zealand Tasman Cup side which visited Australia earlier in the season, showed excellent form and at no stage during the tournament was. she really extended. Her opponent in'the final, Mrs. Pearce, has twice won the Miramar Ladies' Club championship but her path-to the final was by no means as easy as Mrs. Crombie's, one of her matches —against Miss K. Taylor—going to the nineteenth. The large gallery which followed the finalists yesterday afternoon, despite the unpleasant weather, was treated to an exceptionally fine demonstration of golf by. Mrs. Crombie in a strong southerly wind and light ram. The first hole, by means of superior short play, she won in 5 to 6, but her opponent won back a hole at the second, when Mrs. Crombie's iron second developed a nasty swerve to the right and ended in a bunker. The 45t>-yard third was halved in steady 6's but Mrs. Pearce, with a phenomenal putt at the fourth hole, took the lead for the only time in the match. Mrs. Crombie squared the game again at the fifth, where Mrs. Pearce began to have trouble with her putter. Mrs. Crombie won the sixth, seventh, and eighth in excellent figures and, when the ninth was halved, she turned for home with the handy , lead of 3 up. j\lrs. Crombie was lucky to halve the tenth, her approach putt to within inches of the pin saving the hole for her. This was halved in s's. Bad putting again cost Mrs. Pearce the eleventh hole, and with only seven holes left she was 4 down. Her tee shot at the short twelfth was short and well to the right, while Mrs. Crombie's was slightly short of the green but in a direct line. Mrs. Pearce approached well but the bad luck with her putter was again evident and her putt for a half stopped on the lip. It was unfortunate for the Miramar player for it allowed Mrs. Crombie to go to the thirteenth tee in the very comfortable position of being 5 up. Mrs. Pearce's drive at the thirteenth was sliced into the ditch and after lifting out she promptly dispatched the ball back into the same ditch. She thereupon picked up, and the match went to Mrs. Crombie, 6 and 5. The scores for the first nine were as follows: — Mrs. Crombie .. 556444454—41 Mrs. Pearce ... 646355564 —44 MIRAMAR HANDICAP. In the final of the Miramar Handicap, Mrs. Ellison beat Miss V. Campbell (Timaru), 7 and 6. Mrs. Ellison played very stylish golf and proved altogether too much for her opponent,! who, however, showed very fine form to win two handicap events during the tourney. '< In the medal foursomes yesterday, the best gross score was returned by Mrs. Macßae and Mrs. Whyte (Wellington Club) with 89. Miss McKenzie and Mrs. Russell, with 95, 20—75, won the trophy for the best net score. At the conclusion of play trophies were presented to, the winners by Miss A. M. Batham, club captain of the Miramar Ladies' Club. Miss Batham made reference to the fine number of entries received from outside clubs and the sporting spirit which had prevailed throughout. She made special mention of the work of the secretary. Mrs. A. L_ Murray. Mrs. Crombie and Mrs. Normah s^oke on behalf of the Wellington and Hutt Clubs respectively. . ;
