MR. SEMPLE'S BATTALION

"My opponent has said that in the event of war he is today prepared to lead a battalion in dtfence of his country," said Mr. W. L. Barker, who is contesting the Wellington East seat as National candidate against the Hon. R. Semple (Minister of Public Works), in an address at Worser Bay last night. "He led a battalion in 1914— into no man's land, in non-combatant territory. The Government is talking now about New Zealand's defences in the event of war. Mention has been made of the Air Force. We have today ready to engage an attack one aeroplane in Wellington and one in Auckland." Mr. Barker said that to man the garrisons adequately 450 men would be required in Auckland, at least, and a like number in Wellington, on the permanent staff. Actually, ther% were 100 to 120 in each place.
