FARM RETURNS

LABOUR'S CLAIM

When speaking at Makara last night, Mrs. C. S. Stewart; the Labour candidate for Wellington West, stressed the improved conditions of dairy farmers during the last three years. There had been a 10 per cent, increase in wages for workers, Mrs. Stewart said, and during the last two years the farmers of the country had received additional income amounting to many millions. The small farmer who had been earning £ 102 a year when Labour came into office was now getting £295. Labour did not blame the last Government for the slump, but it did claim that the Nationalists had acted in a way that made conditions worse. Labour would avoid that if another fall in prices occurred. The improvement under Labour, said Mrs. Stewart, was shown by the great increase in production and the big increase in Savings Bank deposits. Mrs. Stewart was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
