MEAT EXPORTS
LESS LAMB SHIPPED
Returns covering the whole of the meat export season which closes today, with the exception of the final fortnight, show that the Dominion has sent overseas more beef, mutton, and pork ; but slightly les_s lamb, than in the 1936-37 season. Nearly all the shipments have been to the united Kingdom but points of interest regarding the shipments to other destinations are that 2858 quarters of frozen beef have been sent to Japan this season compared with 4297 quarters in 1936-37 when Japan also took 3177 bags of boneless beef. In addition to quantities of beef and mutton Canada has taken about 8500 carcasses of New Zealand lamb this season, whereas only 100 carcasses went to Canada last season. The figures supplied by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board for the period from October 1, 1937, to September 15, 1938, with the corresponding figures for the previous season in parentheses, are:— Chilled beer, quarters, 234,646 (194,891); frozen beef, quarters, 157,906 (176,048); mutton, carcasses, 1,909,301 (1,721,842); lamb, carcasses, 9,000,367 (9,072,805); pork, carcasses, 635,207 (630,197); boneless beef, bags, 346,142 (283,890).
