MAXAM'S PROSPECTS

ROYEVRUS FOR TRENTHAM

(Special" to the "Evening Post.")

TAKANINI, September 28,

E. Pope is leaving on Friday for the Paeroa Meeting with Maxam and Beverley, while F. Smith, with Paddy the Rip and Round Up, and C. Morse with Gold Petal; are also to make the trip. Without. exception all of'these candidates came through their racing at Avondale in fine order, and they are expected to play a prominent part in their respective engagements.

Maxam looks the logical favourite in che Kerepeehi Handicap, a five-furlong event, and it is not hard to visualise her being extremely difficult to beat on the turning track at Paeroa, as she was only just beaten into third place in a much stronger field at Avondale.

I Beverley has recently been tried over fences, tb which department^ of the game he is adapting himself well. He has been a disappointment, and is probably being, allowed to run oyt his flat nominations before being raced over fences. Paddy the Rip won impressively each day at Avondale, and he promises to be very hard to beat in the nine-furlong hack event. In all his races he has given indications of being suited by a distance of ground. Round Up is likely to be seen to better advantage, providing he strikes a firm track. He petered out at the end of seven furlongs in each pf his Avondale engagements, but there is every reason to believe he will be much harder to dispose of on this occasion, as he was in need of the racing. The declaration of the handicaps for Ellerslie reveals the fact that Royevrus's two wins at Avondale were highly assessed. He has been awarded 8.4 in the Flying Handicap, which represents 51b over weight-for-age, and when it is seen that he is ranked above several good winners, the fact that he is not in classics is very unfortunate. He is among the local horses who may make the trip to Trentham. Two more likely to be seen out et Trentham are Anopheles and Orelio, and should-the trip eventuate, they should add a lot of interest to the'Wellesley Stakes contest. £oth have progressed well in the interim, and their meeting in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday week is being freely discussed.

W. Patterson is again in hospital, and his period of ill health is proving a lengthy one. His two-year-old Hunting Cape is under the supervision of the lightweight horseman L. H. Clifford.

Pocket Venus, who showed fine forrrt at Avondale from impossible barrier positions, is working in improved style, and although she is not an acceptor on the first day at Paeroa, it is intended to take her down for the" five-furlong event on the second day.
