BAIL REFUSED

WOMAN ON GRAVE CHARGE

Bail was refused Marjorie Pickering, a married woman, aged 42, who appeared before Mr. J. I-. Stout,' SJ&, in the Magistrate's Court today, charged with unlawfully using an in-. strument with intent to -»rocure miscarriage.

Detective-Sergeant. P. . Doyle, who stated that the accused was arrested' only last night by Detectives Reid'and Tripney, applied for a remand to Wednesday next.

Mr. C. H. Arndt, who appeared lor the accused, applied for bail. "The charge is one of the gravest, in the criminal calendar," said DetectiveSergeant Doyle, who opposed, tail, and the girl aborted in this case' is Hot yet quite twenty years otf age. .It 5* most unusual for Magistrates in .the Dominion to grant bail in these cases,. and I can remember only one" case in my experience where the Magistrate has granted bail."

Mr. Arndt said that his client was prepared to report ''aily to the police, and there was no reason io believe that she would not appear to-answer to the charge.

On receiving an assurance fram the Detective-Sergeant that the police would probably be ready to proceed on Wednesday next the Magistrate said that he would refuse bail in the mean-? time.

The accused collapsed and had tq» be assisted from the dock.
