DIOCESAN APPEAL
INTERESTING FIGURES
Speaking at St. George's Church, Seatoun, and at St. Aidan's Hall, Miramar, this week, Canon D. B. Malcolm, organising secretary of the Wellington Diocesan Centenary Appeal, disclosed that of the £300,000 airhed at,/to date £60,000 had been received or promised for the cathedral and £10,000 for the Bishop's Fighting Fund, making a total of £70,000. . Referring to the purpose of the Bishop's Fighting Fund, he said that it had been computed that £82,000 would be required if all the old and inadequate buildings in the diocese were to be replaced.
Dealing with the appeal for £200,000 for the cathedral project, Canon Malcolm said that Wellington was the only capital city of a British Dominion, which had no worthy cathedral. The cathedral which was to be built was to be the spiritual centre of the diocese where people could go and gain fresh inspiration for their own parishes from its services and music. Canon Malcolm revealed that the design of the cathedral as it appeared on the literature which had been distributed was to be modified considerably, making for a broader building with more favourable acoustics. He dealt at length with the Bishop's Fighting Fund, citing many instances of parishes where the clergy were grossly overworked and the buildings inadequate. The vicar of the parish thanked Canon Malcolm for his clear and concise statement of the case and promised that the two churches in the district would do all they could to further the cause. Although the campaign is not yet in full operation in the parish, over £100 has been given already.
