IMPROVING AGAIN SOON

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Light to moderate southerly winds, decreasing tomorrow and tending northerly.

Weather cloudy to overcast with occasional light rain, but soon improving. Temperatures moderate.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate and variable winds.- Southerlies will predominate at first from Canterbury and Westland northward, and northerlies thence southward, but the latter will gradually extend northward and should reach beyond Cook Strait by tomorrow. In the far north, and-south the weather will be fine at first, but elsewhere it will be cloudy to overcast, with scattered and mainly light rain. Conditions, however, will improve from the west and south. Temperatures will be moderate.

Rather intense anticyclones are located over the north and over the south of New Zealand. In between has been a slight depression which caused unsettled weather to develop overnight in central provinces. Otherwise, except for some light showers in the far south, the weather has been fair to fine. Apart from .moderate to fresh north-westerlies ixit the Cook Strait, area, winds yesterday were light and variable. There was a southerly change in the far south yesterday afternoon, and this during the night moved up the South Island, reaching Wellington about 9 a.m. today. The southerly, however, decreased in force as it advanced northward and is now very weak. There is still some rain about the northern half of the South Island, but the weather there has improved./ It is still raining, however, in numbers of places in South Taranaki, Wellington, and Southern Hawke's Bay. But falls have been only moderate, the highest totals being 101 points at Jackson's Bay, in Sputh Westland, 86 points at Westport, and 81 points at^Foxton. Temperatures were mild yesterday > but it has become cooler in the South Island. , Auckland has had fine weather with light and variable winds and. average temperatures. Yesterday's maximum and minimum were 62.8 and 42.1 degrees. Wellington had a mild day with 8.7 hours of bright sunshine. In.the middle of the evening, however, light rain set in and intermittent rain continued throughout the night, nine points being recorded up to 9 a.m. today. There ■was a fresh northerly wind yesterday afternoon, but this decreased during the night and there was a change to a southerly about 9 aon. today. Yesterday's maximum and minimum temperatures were 57.9 and 48.9 degrees respectively. Christchurch had clear skies yesterday morning, but it clouded over during the afternoon and there were a few drops of rain. A north-easterly wind blew during the day, giving place at 10 pjn. to a south-westerly. The weather this morning was cool and overcast. The maximum temperature yesterday was 58.7 degrees and the minimum 45.9 degrees. In Dunedin yesterday the weather was. dull and mild, light rain falling in the early morning and again in the evening, the latter fall being accounted for by a rather weak southerly change. The weather has since im--proved, and this morning it was partly cloudy and cool.
