TAKING OVER INDUSTRY
A warning that the Labour Government^ intended to take-over certain.industries in New Zealand was voiced by Mr. D. P. Howlett, National candidate for Wellington South, . when speaking at Ohiro Bay last evening.-He gave as an instance the dyers' and cleaners' industry, which had applied for a 44-hour week on account- of .the exceptional nature of its trade, afcd had been refused by the Minister .-fof Labour. At that interview Mr. Armstrong had asked the dyers and cleaners if they had an association. When .informed that they had not, the Minister told them to "hurry up and get on§" or,he would form one for them. ■• When asked to explain his statement, the Minister had said that the Government would take 'over the largest concern and refuse a "licence tp the remainder under the Industrial Efficiency Act. That, Mr. Howlett contended, was an illustration that private enterprise was unsafe in New Zealand under a.Socialist administration. .: ''*.
