SURMOUNT SHAPES WELL

The- weather was ideal for track work at Awapuni yesterday, the track being much faster than it has been for some time.

Oratory was sprinted five furlongs in lmin 4-|sec, the best gallop of the morning. The first two furlongs occupied 26sec and the last three 38£ sec. Laughing Lass and Surmount traversed five furlongs without being pressed in lmin 5 2-ssec.

Daniel Defoe and Ecstatic were companions over three furlongs, and the former, after securing a break of two lengths at the start, was still half a length to the good, breaking 39sec for the distance.

Quadroon was given a working gallop over a mile and a quarter, taking lmin 55£ sec for the last mile. Titter and Snigger sprinted half a mile in 52sec. the latter being a shadfi in front at the finish.

Silver River and Prediction hit out boldly over five furlongs, in lmin 6sec. the last three furlongs in 39 l-ssec.

The Buzzer and The Bigot were going along easily at the end of six furlongs in lmin 20sec. They afe improving all the time.

Tail Light was just in front of Rarotonga at the end of a mile, the last seven furlongs of which took lmin 35 l-ssec. White Gold led Lady Ina throughout five furlongs in lmin 7-Jsec. White Gold went particularly well. Chere Amie finished well clear of Cuddler at the end of five furlongs in lmin 6 3-ssec, the last, three in 40sec, and Classform and Aurora's Star ran home from the three-furlong post in 39sec.

Pango (W. J. McDowell), Rolling Home (W. E. Pine), and Three Star (N. C. Trillo) were schooled over four fences, Pango and Rolling Home giving good displays of fast jumping. The following riding engagements have been announced for Otaki: —W. J. Broughton, Thracsos, Rustem, Surmount, Galteemore; B. H. Morris, Barley Almond. Snigger; W. E. Pine, Rolling Home; G. Pratt, Titter; S. Anderson, Drachma, Trebor, Free Gold.
