WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION In view of the fact that there will be counter sports attractions on Saturday, November 19, the date previously arranged, the management committee 'of the Wellington Cricket Association decided last night to hold its special series of matches for the Playing Fields Fund on Saturday, December 3. Next Monday representatives from the Hutt Valley Cricket Association and the Wellington Mercantile League will meet the management committee to discuss the matter of arranging suitabe matches for that day. Ninety-four entries, a record as far as can be ascertained, were received for this year's competitions, and in view of the fact that there is an extreme shortage of wickets this year the committee expressed concern regarding the accommodation of all the teams each Saturday. Actually 42 wickets are available, but when the Basin Reserve is being used by other organisations only 39 wickets will remain. A point made clear by the chairman, Mr. J. H. Phillipps, was that eighty cricketers would be unable to play each Saturday unless more grounds were obtained, and in view of this he considered that all Wellington cricketers should make it their duty to see that the day allotted for the Playing Fields Fund was successful. The City Council advised that the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre had been granted the use of the Basin Reserve on four Saturdays this year, and one date, November 12, when the secondary school sports tournament would be held, was stated to be one of the Saturdays. In view of the seriousness of the playing fields question the'committee decided to ask for the dates of the other three Saturdays as soon as they were available. A suggestion by Mr. C. Moore, that players not engaged on Saturdays should assist in the umpiring of matches, was favourably received by members. After suggestions had been made it was moved that the city Council be approached to see if they could make available any portions of grounds suitable for the laying down of a wicket and the conducting of a cricket match. - . , As there would be a third grade match at the Basin Reserve each Saturday, in addition to the two senior games, Mr. Phillipps said it would be impossible to grant the Women s Cricket Association the occasional use of a wicket on that ground. . Practice wickets at the Basin Reserve were allocated the samejis last year with the exception that the institute Club will have the use of the representative wicket until it is required, and the St. Patrick's College Old Boys' Club will be allowed the use of the coaching wicket until it also is wanted. ~ , . „ Following were the entries reWellington College (2), Wellington College Old Boys (5), Institute (12), Hutt (6), Petone (3), Johnsonville (2), Porirua (1), Onslow (8), Karon (8), Midland (7), Wellington (7), Y.M.CA.
