PARTIA MOBILISED
FRENCH FORCES
ESSENTIAL FOR SECURITY
OVER A MILLION MEN UNDER ARMS
j (Received September 26, 9 a.m.) PARIS, September 24. Partial mobilisation orders calling up certain categories of reservists were posted at 4 a.m. today in town halls throughout France. The partial mobilisation has been i-xlended to the air force and navy. The Premier, M. Daladier, announced at 10.30 p.m. that there was no general mobilisation. The War Office states that France has now more than a million men under arms. M. Daladier issued a statement, saying: "Measures which are essential for security, taken this morning, were welcomed and carried out by all Frenchmen with the resolution and calmness which the Government expected, "France is thus able to pursue with dignity important diplomatic negotiations on which the maintenance of peace depends." Within an hour after the issue of the proclamation thousands of reservists in mufti were flocking to the colours and crowding the stations awaiting transport to their regiments. Those called up are chiefly artillerymen, air mechanics, sappers, and electricians, mostly required for the Maginot line. Railway men on the eastern lines have been individually warned to stand by. M. Daladier has issued a decree that the Government will take control of the railways, giving priority to military transport. The 40-hour week law is to be suspended.
Hundreds of British tourists trying to go home are unable to obtain accommodation on the trains.
