CLUB OPENINGS

GAME NOW IN FULL SWING

In splendid weather a number M tennis clubs opened in the city aifii suburbs on Saturday afternoon . and the game was in full swing on many of the Wellington courts. There were good attendances at all openings asd the first games of the season were thoroughly enjoyed. SEATOUN CLUB. The Seatoun Club was opened , by Mr. W. Murie, the club president, and about 75 members and friends, including representatives of the directorate, were present. Mr. Murie, who was introduced by Mr. R. P. Cooper, wished the club every success in the coming season. Mrs. Murie hit the first ball over the net. Mr. A. M. Pinkerton represented the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. Mr. Murie presented a trophy, donated by Mr. R. P. Cooper, to Mrs. C. H. Dunn for the best performance in inter-club play, last year, and a similar one, also presented by Mr. Cooper, has been won by Mr. K. Yeoman for the same thing. 'Afternoon tea was served. A dance was held in the pavilion at night. RINTOUIi STREET CLUB. Mr. R. McKeen opened the Rintdul Street Club in the- absence of the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), and wished it every success. About eighty members and friends were present and following the opening ceremony a Yankee tournament was held. Mr. G. Nevitt represented the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. TE RAMA CLUB, The president of the Te Rama Club, when opening the season, apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor. He complimented the club on the state of the courts and hoped the members would have a successful season. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was represented by Messrs. H. L. Pollock and K. Dunnett. Mr. Pollock presented the cup won last season by the club's third grade women's team m the inter-club matches and congratulated the team on its excellent performance. The trophies won in the various club events last season were also presented; *uA tournament, held during the afternoon, was won by Miss M. Kershaw and Mr. V. Dixon. **■■•"*• CRAWFORD HDLL CLUB. The Crawford Hill.Club's new season was opened by the president, Mr BC Ashwin, before -an attendance of about seventy members and visitors. Messrs. H. L. Pollock and K. Dunnett were present, representing the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, and Mr. S. Fernandez represented the Wellington Umpires' Association. Mr. Pollock congratulated the club on winning the third grade men's interclub competition. The Ngaio Club was opened by the patron, Mr. Jerome, who presented the trophies won in the club events last season. There was an attendance of about forty members, including Mr!. R. A feature of the Khandallah Club's opening was the large number of p&st members who attended,' some of them having played at the club thirty years ago. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was represented by Mr.^R. McL. Ferkins. Mr. E. Reeves, of the Umpires' Association, was aiso present. Mr. R. B. Gibbons, president and life member, in declaring the season open, recalled incidents in the club life of earlier days. Mr. Reeves expressed good wishes to the club for the coming season, and spoke of the aims of the association and the desirability of several club members becoming efficient umpires. The courts were in great demand, and about 80 players took part in a number of interesting games. During the afternoon an exhibition match, which was greatly enjoyed, was played by Messrs. D. France and N. Edwards.
