WELLINGTON TROTS

THE SPRING MEETING

FINE DAY AT HUTT PARK

EXCELLENT GOING

(By "Rangatira.")

yayolired with, ideal weather, the • " W&Uiigton Trotting Club's Spring '" Meeting was held at Hutt Park today under, much better conditions than have been the club's lot during recent ■■'._/. seasons. There were excellent fields lor so early in the term, and the excellent going, which a week's fine , " weather had quite firmed up, made tot highly interesting and''entertain- "'/■■■ ing sport. The weather was helpful in attracting a large attendance, despite the .;"' ominous reports of the morning con- * cernhig the international situation, and patrons set themselves out to enj j"by a day" of trotting and pacing under """'' conditions that so materially assist in "; " producing the best in light-harness " contests. ' The betting, as is now usual at the Park, was under the win-and-place .... system. j ■.-..■' I Results to time of going to press <■ wiere':— JIAI NAI HANDICAP, £175; second ''■'■■ -horse £30 and third £20 from the stake; 3.40 class; l& miles. 3—3—Mr. "W. Axiom established a lead of a dozen lengths in the first three iurkmgs, but on the last round he ysteadily came back to his field, and \;S^amore, without having to leave the ' fence until in the straight, then easily cut him down. However, no sooner was the" favourite in front, than he broke, and Dollar Maid finished strongly out on the track to win by a length. Four lengths behind Sagamore was Biworthy, who had been always handy, and Arapai and Axiom followed. Tonee and Native Leaf broke up early. :" .-■■. ■.'■' • : .. ■•• ■ ' i ■ , HANDICAP, £175$ second horse £30. and third £20 from the ; '.•: stake; 3.5 class; U miles. :1 s^s^.Mr; J. The failure of Mazaire to leave the! mark in the Sharpe Handicap was. costly to investors, as this horse was more * than three times as well backed as anything else in .the field, Royal Thread was early in front, but De Reske soon assumed charge, and he '" led past the stand from Royal Thread, - - Sentiment, and Silver Grattan, who - were beginning to move away from the rest. On ihe.... home turn Royal Thread passed ;Pe Reske again, but Sentiment crept down on him in the last furlong, and beat him by half a length. Ten lengths away Pe1, Reske held on for third, with Silver Grattan fourth, well . clear •of Lady Vas- '* clyne, First Shake, and Radiant Prince. Lady Vasclyne and Mazaire looked as if they would have both been in the money if they had not broken up at the start. After being handy in third place until three furlongs from home in the « Bollard Memorial Handicap, Philario came right away in the - straight to ~-win very decisively. He was never off the bit at any stage, and over the final furlong there was only one horse in it. Twenty Grand came home in great style wide out on the track, to credit M. B. Edwards with both first and second, Bexley Girl was .pocketed on the rails at the turn, but once clear put in some good work in the middle of the track- Dark Hazard did not appear to be pacing at all evenly, and he never threatened danger, Fremont had every chance, but failed, to run bn, Marlene finished well for fourth. . ,• WELLINGTON STAKES, £500; second '■,'•'■ .'. horse £100 and third £50 from the .
