| ' (To the Editor.) Sir, —The Blum Socialist Government in France restored all wage and salary cuts, raised wages "and shortened hours, brought in unionism, a new minimum wage scale, holidays with pay, vacations with pay, legislation to put the Government in charge of the Bank, raised the school-leaving age, appointed Under-Secretaries to Ministers; planned agriculture, etc. These measures, however humanitarian, so increased the cost of production that France is not at'j to compete in the world markets, and .practically has lost all her valuable export trade. Any attempt to get the wheels moving, by relaxing any of these concessions, is I met. by militant sit-down strikes, andindustrially France at the present time is likened to "a rotten pear"—one good shake of the tree and she will fall. It will be noted that all.the above legislation has been enacted in New Zealand by the Labour Government, with an added impost of a 40-hour week against 44, and on top of this, in New Zealand industry has been saddled with a super-pension and medical and hospital benefit scheme. Is it any wonder that New Zealand is now called the "Fools' Paradise of the Pacific"?— I am, etc., t C. ROCKS.
