END-OF-SEASON RUNS

PHILP SHIELD TEAMS RACE

The Philp Shield race was held by the Olympic Harrier Club on Saturday and was won by D. Sunderland. Several end-of-the-season runs were made by other clubs. It was. fine, but the going was heavy. OLYMPIC CLUB. The Olympic Harriers contested the Philp Shield teams race at Miramar over three and a half miles, starting from the tennis courts. Campbell was soon the leader and led up Darlington Road to the paddocks. L., Myers was . in front crossing the swamp to the hills, and at this point Fisher, Reid, Murray, and Sunderland drew away from the rest of the field. At Miramar Avenue Fisher was the leader into Para Street, : where he was passed by Sunderland, i who came home first in the good time of 20min. [ The Baptist Harriers held their last i run of the season from the home of Mr. C Collins, 19 Ariki Road, Hataitai. The run took the form of a teams race, the winning team being D. McGregor, G. B Tracy led for the first mile and a v half, but then T. Tritt took the lead, these two being well ahead of the , Tritt went on to win by 80 yard 3 from D. S. There was a large attendance of Wellington Club members and supporters when the club was the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. Rowberry at Seatoun for the final club race of the season, the Resnick Cup, over four miles. Fourteen members faced the starter. J. Drawbridge, one of the limit men, started off at a fast pace and he was not passed, winning by 18 seconds from E. Chown, who was .31 seconds ahead of E. Willetts. Beere; erner* : gency, R. Flint. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. The Presbyterian Club's final run! for the season * was held from the Wadestown Church, with a good attendance. The trail of about five miles, laid by R. Craig and H. Easton, led down to Highland Park, up Sefton Street, and around the face of the hill until overlooking the Ngaio gorge; then down the hill, across the railway, ■up the stream, and tavelling off into the bush. It led back to the railway, through a belt of pine trees, along Wilton Road, until opposite Izard Park* and home down Cecil Road. There was no run-in. Afternoon tea was served by the Bible Class girls, and Mr. W. J. Ferguson thanked them. Mr. McKenzie congratulated the club on having had a progressive season, and extended his wishes for a successful season in 1939. METHODIST CLUB. The Methodist Harrier Club held its banquet in Wesley Hall, Taranaki Street, on Saturday evening. The hall was tastefully decorated and the tables , well laden to cater for the 150 guests. Items were excellently rendered by ' Miss E. "Gibson, Mrs. D. Payne, and Mr. A. Bruce. The club patron, Mr. E. S: C. Trevethick, presented cups and trophies won during the season. Spectacles of which the lenses are tested by dropping a steel ball on them* from a height of six feet have lately been on exhibition in London.
