MR. GEORGE THOMAS
The death has occurred of Mr. George Thomas, of Mangere, Auckland, at the age of 81. Mr. Thomas was born at Penzance, England, and arrived at Wellington in the ship Hermione in 1878. In 1881 he was married to Miss Mary Carrol, who had arrived from J Dublin in the preceding year. Mr. Thomas remained in Wellington for 31 years, and was engaged in a carrying business. For six years he was a member of the Karori Borough Council. Later, he took up farming at Te Kowhai, in the Waikato district, where he took an active part in local affairs, being a member of the Newcastle Road Board and president of the Te Kowhai Farmers' Club. In 1918 Mr. Thomas went to Mangere, and was engaged for many years in farming and lin a carrying business, which his son ! later took over. Mr. Thomas enjoyed remarkably good health, and took a keen interest in his son's business up to the time of his death. He is surivived by his wife and one son. There are three grandchildren.
