MOTORING AFFAIRS

NORTH ISLAND UNION

PROPOSED DOMINION i CONFERENCE

(By/ Telegraph—Press Association.) HAWERA, August 26. A iproposal to establisli a Dominion motor conference was discussed at the anniaal conference of the North Island/ Motor Union today. The matter is to be referred to sub-committees of representatives of the North Island and South Island Unions, these to repart to the half-yearly meeting. A report presented by Mr. A. R. Grayson, Auckland, and Mr. G. Laurejnce, South Taranaki, recommended I a scheme to enable motor unions to speak with one voice on national afJ&iirs and to provide opportunities for representatives of all associations in jthe Dominion to develop consistency .on objects and outlook. It suggested 4that the conferences at present held tin each island be replaced by an all/New Zealand meeting, to, be held alternately in each island, this conference not to have executive powers but its decisions to be in the nature of recommendations to the respective unions or to the New Zealand Motor Conference, The following remits were adopted: "That the union make representations to the Government for the inauguration of compulsory education in schools with regard to safety-first." (Wellington.) "That, for the free legal defence service, each association appoint a solicitor in those centres where a Magistrate's Court sits and notify the union of the names and addresses of such appointees, and that each solicitor so appointed be -instructed/ by his association to empfloy as his agent, where the services of an agent are required, the solicitor appointed by the Automobile Association." (Taranaki.) "That, as ordinary plate-glass is being used in Qic windscreens of certain cars assembled in the Dominion, the matter be referred to the Commissioner of Transport." (Wellington.) The election of officers resulted:— President. Dr. .E. E. Porritt (Wanganui); vice-presidents, Messrs. A. R. Grayson (Auckiland) and J. H. Edmundson (Napier); executive council, Messrs. F. G. Irj'arrell (Auckland), W. 8. Guild (Taraiaaki), C, R. Honeyfield (South Taranraki), A. S. Burgess (Wanganui). \V. H. Brown (Manawatu), J. W. Roydhouse (Wairarapa), E. Palliser (Wellington), and Dr. W. D. Fitzgerald (Haufce's Bay); delegates to the South Islfcnd Motor Union conference, Messrs. E. A. Batt (Wellington) and Grayson. Provision of facilities for the purchase of petrol after ordinary hours received the attention of the conference. It was decided to seek an assurance from the.' reselling bodies that motorists' interests would be safe- '' guarded. . The Petrol Resellers' Association advised that the hours which service station employees shjould work had not yet been fixed. It was suggested that where local schernies could be worked out no drastic curtailment of hours should be applied. It was stated by one delegate that the opening of emergency stations after the closing of gpetrol stations at 8 p.m. was pending. The union should watch this development to ensure Do-minion-wide application.
