MIRAMAR ESPERANTO

Mr. Joseph Major, who came to Wellington from Paris in 1930 and left in 1932 for Japan, returned to New Zealand last Friday by the Ruahine from London, and was the guest of honour at the weekly meeting of the Miramar Esperanto Society last Tuesday evening. Mr. Bertram Potts, J.P., presided.

Mr. James E. Wells, the secretary, in introducing the speaker, stated that Mr. Major had spent several interesting years in Japan and had been editor of one of the Japanese Esperanto magazines for two or three years, achieving a wide reputation for his literary abilities. The magazine had a large circulation in all countries, so that the visitor had returned with international fame as a writer. He had pleasure, on behalf of the society, in welcoming the guest. Mr. Major, speaking in Esperanto, stated that he had had a wonderful reception since his return from the East. In fact, wherever he had been, he had experienced a warm welcome, thanks to his knowledge of Esperanto. He had had the pleasure of lecturing from one end of Japan to the other and visiting many outlying islands. Before returning to New Zealand he had visited Europe and the Universal Esperanto Congress in Warsaw, where over a thousand delegates of over 60 countries had used the one simple language, Esperanto, for all meetings. He was pleased to be back in New Zealand. Mr. L. E. Dust, D.8.E.A., delegate of the Universal Esperanto Association, also welcomed Mr. Major. During the instruction period, the visitor conducted the senior class, explaining many interesting features of Japanese and Esperanto grammar.
