WELLINGTON CLUB

The annual meeting of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Club was held on Tuesday night in the club's pavilion, the chairman of the management committee, Mr. H. L. Wise, presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr. Wise said that the club had every reason to congratulate itself upon the success of the past season. The club had won two of the inter-club events conducted by the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, namely, the senior A men's championship and the second division women's event, neither of these teams having lost a match in their respective grades.

A considerable measure of success ihad been achieved by members in outside tournaments, and several had been selected for representative fixtures, notably Mr. E. A. Roussell, who was selected to represent Wellington in the Wilding Shield match against Canterbury, and Misses F. Fernie and E. Plummer, who had been selected to represent Wellington in the Nunneley Casket team against •. Canterbury. Mr. D. C. Coombe had been nominated to play at Wimbledon, and in the various tournaments in which he had participated in England had met with a substantial amount of success.

The club championship and handicap events had been well supported and the standard of play had been well maintained. Mr. Wise congratulated Mr. E. A. Roussell upon winning the men's singles championship for the eighth successive time, and Miss F. Fernie upon winning the women's singles championship for the fifth time. Financially the club was in a sound position. " ■ Mr. E. Partridge, m supporting the motion, also congratulated the club upon the successful result of the year's activities, both • financially and otherwise. ; During the meeting a motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. Ray Roussell was carried.. Mr. Roussell had been one of the club s most enthusiastic workers and players, said Mr. Wise, and his loss would be most keenly felt. Appreciative reference was made by Mr. D. Purves to the work of Mr. Wise, as chairman of the management committee of the club, as one of the club s delegates to the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, and as a member of the management committee of that association. During the evening Mr. Wise made a presentation on behalf of the members to the secretary, Mr. J.
