PRESIDENT'S AFTERNOON

TEA

NELSON, August 25. ; A delightful tea party was given yesterday afternoon by Mrs. S. A Gibbs president of the Nelson Women's Club. The club rooms were charmingly decorated with spring blossoms and bulbs, and lovely bowls of mignonette. After tea there was singing, competitions, and most amusing charades, these depicting well-known characters in history. There was King Henry VIII, bluff and burly, with his wives; Flora Macdonald; George Washington and his little axe; Sir Walter Raleigh; Lady Godiva and her horse; and several others. Those taking part were Mesdames Moynihan, J. B. Lemmer, E. R. Neale, F. R. Parker, A. Campbell, G. Dodds, Miss M. Nevin. Some of those present were Mrs. C. Y. Fell, Mrs. E. E. Kennedy, Mrs. C. Graham, Mrs. S. A.-Wiggins, Lady Rigg, Mrs. W. W. Squires, Mrs. Frost, Mrs. C. R. Fell, Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. H. S. Robison, Mrs. A. E. Tasker, Mrs. A. R. Dyson, Miss Sclanders, Mrs. Kidson, Mrs. R. A. A Birthday Party. A birthday was celebrated last Friday by Mrs. James Sclanders, whose family was associated with the early history of Nelson, and many old friends went to give her their greetings in the afternoon. They included Miss E. M. Richmond, Miss F. A. Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. K. Sclanders, Mr. and Mrs. Macdonald, Mrs. F. J. Earle, Miss Tomlinson. Women's Gplf. An enjoyable weekend was spent by a team of golfers who went to Blenheim to play for the Cock-Bennett Cup. This cup is played for twice during the year, on each of the two links, and on this occasion the Marlborough women were just too good for the Nelson players. The Critchley Cup, which has been recently given by Mr. and Mrs. C. Critchley, for inter-club com-' petition on handicap, was also won by Marlborough. Those who made the trip were Miss L. Lucas, Mesdames Topliss, Miller, Milner, Tressider, and Boyes. A Farewell. It was with very great regret that members of the Plunket Society met the other afternoon at the Mia Mia Tearooms to bid farewell to Mrs. W. C. Harley, who, with her husband, will leave shortly for Samoa. Mrs. Harley has been connected with the Plunket Society for many years, and for her very active help she will be much j missed on this and other societies in which she was interested. Miss Nevin, president, referred to the help always given so willingly by Mrs. Harley, and her remarks were heartily endorsed by the ex-presidents who were present, Mrs. William Lock, Mrs. F. Buchanan, Mrs. J. R. R. Wallace. Other members present were Mrs. C. Y. Fell, Mrs. R. H. Davies, Lady Rigg, Mrs. F. A. Bett, Mrs. J. Williams, Mrs. E. R. Neale, Miss Rhodes, Mrs. A. R. Griffen, Mrs. McKee Wright, Mrs. Stride, Mrs. Hurrell Mrs. H. Pitts Brown, Mrs. K. S. Farmer, Mrs. Dawson, and Mrs. Pownall. , . Among other hostesses who have given farewell parties for Mrs. Harley are Mrs. F. H. Greenwood and the Misses Hayes. Personals. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Beattie have returned to Nelson from Christchurch, where they went last week for the schools' football tournament. Dr. and Mrs. W. D. S. Johnston have returned from Christchurch. A cable message has been received in Wellington stating that the wedding of Miss Margaret Raws, daughter of Sir Lennon Raws, Melbourne, to Mr. Cecil Millbourne, London, will pc solemnised at St. James's Church, Piocadfiy, today. Mr. Cecil Millbourne is well known throughout the motor industry in New Zealand, and Sir Lennon Raws is chairman of directors of Imperial Chemical Industries m Australia and New Zealand.
