MR. T. W. DOWNES

WANGANUI, August 7
The death occurred in a private ho^-i pital at Wanganui on Saturday nighp of Mr. Thomas William Downes, age*!' 70 years. Mr. Downes was a recognised world authority on Maori history aflid the flora and fauna of New Zeaianfd. When the Australian Science Congress was held at Dunedin three years ago, Mr. Downes was chairman of|the ethnological section. He was a firequent contributor to the journal of |the Polynesian Society and the journal dealing with the transactions of/the New. Zealand Institute, and his work was regarded as authoritative notjonly for New Zealand but in Europe* and the United States.
He was vice-president of the Wa.nganui Museum and the Wanganui Historical Society, and was the author/ of a book, "Old Whanganui," dealing? with the history of the Maoris along the Wanganui River and the coming {of the" pakehas. For many years lie was supervisor of the Wanganui •' River Trust. ,
He is survived by a widow; and a daughter, Mrs. C. Barthgate, s'ihama. Taranaki.
