PERSONAL NOTES

Lady Hosking arrived in Wellington from Christchurch yesterday, and will leave for a visit to England by the Rangitiki tomorrow. She will join her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. John Hosking.

Captain and Mrs. E. S. Dawes and their son,- who have been staying at the Midland Hotel since they arrived in New Zealand, will leave by the Rangitiki tomorrow night on their return to England.

Miss Elizabeth Loe arrived at Wellington today, after conducting drama rehearsals in the Waikato. She returned via the Waitomo Caves and the Chateau.

Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Grigg,. Hororata, will be the guests of Mrs. T. Teschemaker for Grand National Week in Christchurch, and Mr. and ■ Mrs. Arthur Griggs, Surrey Hills, will be the guest of Mrs. J. Cracrbft Wilson.

Mr. E. T. Porter and Miss Arline Porter, Wellington, are spending a: holiday in England and Europe. They will return to New Zealand via New York in October, states "The Post's" London correspondent.

Mrs. F. Silver (Rawhitora) and Mrs. A, Reai'don (Tariki) are the guests of Mrs. H. R. Wright, Brooklyn, during the Women's Institute conference.

Mrs. Derrick Gould, who was the guest of her sister, Mrs. J. H. SinclairThomson, Timaru, has returned to Christchurch. -

Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Huntley (Matarawa)< and their small daughter arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Rangitata. They will spend several days with Mrs. E. Barrett, Epsom, before returning to the. Wairarapa* ;

Miss Catherine Johnston, inglewood, is" spending.a holiday in Wellington, and will leave for Auckland next week. She will be accompanied by her'sister, Mrs. W. Bruce, with whom she is now staying; • • ,

Mrs. Florence Crocker, Sydney, who is a daughter of the late Mr. J. G. Davies, Wellington, is visiting New Zealand, and after a tour of the North Island is at present in Wellington. Mrs. Crocker resided in New Zealand some years ago, and was prominent in musical circles, broadcasting as a contralto soloist at many choral performances. She expects to leave for Syd-i ney by the Wanganella on August 4.

Mrs. H.. Wilkinson, Dargaville, is spending a holiday at Wellington.

Mrs. R. F. Pilkington (delegate) and Mrs. A. J. Beamsley are visitors to Wellington for the Women's Institute conference. They are the guests ,of Mrs, A. Gosden, Ngaio.

The . Misses Katrine . and .May Hursthouse, of Wellington, spent the northern winter in the Riviera and Italy, and went -to London in the spring. They. were fortunate, as an aunt, Mrs. Stoeker, asked them to make her house their home while.she went to Jerusalem•.-to join her husband, Major Stoeker, who is in Palestine to help deal with the disturbances there. Miss Hursthouse and her sister have immensely enjoyed the busy London life and the home full of contemporary English cousins. Their brother William is nearby in Imperial Airways, Croydon, at present. Mrs. Stoeker has now returned, and after paying a number of promised visits they intend spending the late summer months in Germany, and they have booked their passages back to New Zealand for early in December. .: Miss Patricia. Lusher, M.A., at present on the staff of Queen Margaret College, has been chosen as the holder of the first post-graduate scholarship yto' be awarded by the New Zealand; Federation of University Women for study,, abroad. The selection was made by.the committee appointed by the Dominion executive from sixteen applications. Miss Lusher's academic record is one pi great distinction. In 1930 left the Epsom Girls' Grammar School, Auckland, with a junior university scholarship, taking fourth place inr New Zealand. At Auckland University College, she completed her B.A. degree, and was senior scholar in English for New Zealand. In 1934. she took first-class honours in. Latin, being placed first in New Zealand, while in 1935 she took second-class honours in English, her special subject being Icelandic. ,
