JERUSALEM, July 7. There^ is extremely acute tension today throughout the whole country after yesterday's carnage at Haifa, when a bomb exploded in the crowded municipal market near the central police station, killing 18 Arabs and three Jews, and seriously wounding 38 others.
This is the worst single outrage since the present Arab-Jewish tension began. Temporary panic • reigned after the explosion, after which, it is alleged, the police opened fire to restore order, although it is reported that other shots were fired from ,the housetops. This caused -other fatalities.
The tragic death-roll of the outrage has raised the bitterness and animosity existing betweeri < Arabs and Jews to fever pitch.
Haifa's main street resembled a ghastly shambles late last night. Dead, dying, and injured were lying among the wreckage of cars and market stalls.
Jews and Arabs are violently blaming .each other for causing the shootings. Ten Arab supernumerary police have been arrestedj and charged with indiscriminately shooting at the crowds.
