IMPOSSIBLE TASK

EXPLOITATION OF DEPOSITS

IN ANTARCTICA

(Received July 8, 10.20 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

Mr. B. R. O'Brien, a member of Admiral Byrd's second expedition to the Antarctic, who is now visiting Sydney from New Zealand, said that for various reasons any commercial exploitation of gold, coal, and other mineral deposits in the ice area was impossible.

Mr. O'Brien was referring to the proposal for the Federal Government to consult with the British and New Zealand Governments to see whether any purpose could be served by organising an expedition to the Antarctic.

A message from Canberra on July 5 stated that the Federal Cabinet had decided to seek the opinion of the British and New Zealand Governments on the'subject of a further Antarctic expedition based on equal contributions by the three interested parties.
