NEW CHAIRMAN APPOINTED

The National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., received cable advice from London today to the effect that at the annual meeting of the bank, held yes'terday, Sir Austin E. Harris resigned from the chairmanship of the bank, but will remain a member of the, board; also that L-rxjd Balfour of Burleigh has been elected chairman of j directors in his stead. j Lord Balfour of Burleigh joined the Board of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., in 1929. He visited New Zealand during 1936 and 1937 when he spent three months in this Dominion and during that periodi visited every branch of the bank. In July last year, following his return to London from New Zealand, Lord Balfour was appointed deputy chairman. Lord Balfour has had a varied financial experience and at the present time is also a director of the District Bank, Ltd., Manchester, the Standard Bank of South Africa, Ltd., and the Bank of | Scotland, and he is also chairman of the'London,,Board of the Australian Mutual Provident Society.

Sir Austin E. Harris has been a director of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., since 1919, and was elected Chairman of Directors in 1932 on the retirement through illness of the previous chairman, the late Hon. William Pember Reeves, who had held the position since 1918. Sir Austin Harris is deputy chairman of Lloyd's Bank, Ltd., one of the "Big Five" British banks.
