COLD NIGHTS

Special forecast for Wellington:-*-Light to moderate and variable winds. Weather fair to fine, with cold night and milder day temperatures.

The general forecast for the Dominion'as a whole, issued at noon today for1 the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate and variable winds., South-easterlies will predominate over the northern half of the North Island, and northerlies over the southern half of the South Island. The weather will be fine ajmost generally, but morning fogs and a light drizzle are probable in places. Day temperatures will be milder, but the night will be cold, with many frosts.

A. rather intense anticyclone has extended across the Tasman Sea and this morning it was covering New Zealand. Winds yesterday were rather light and variable in the South Island, while light to moderate southerlies or south-easterlies prevailed in the North Island. A few isolated light showers are reported on the East Coast between Cook Strait and East Cape and also in the far north, but over most of the country the weather has become fine and clear. Temperatures have been cold and many sharp frosts have been reported, the minimum grass temperature at Alexandra this morning, for instance, being as low as 11 degrees, which is equivalent to- 21 degrees of frost.

Auckland's weather yesterday was fair to cloudy and cool, with a light breeze from between south and east. This morning it' had clouded over and a light south-easterly was blowing. Yesterday's maximum and minimum temperatures were 55.3 and 44.8 degrees respectively, and a trace of rain was recorded.

In Wellington it was cold and rather changeable, with occasional light showers. The sky cleared in the night, however, and a frost was recorded this morning. The wind yesterday was a light to moderate south-easterly, but this morning it was almost calm. The amount of sunshine yesterday was 1,3 hours and seven points of rain were recorded. The maximum temperature was 46.4 degrees and the minimum 35.0 degrees. The minimum on the grass at Kelburn last night was 26.1 degrees, or 5.9 degrees of frost.

Christchurch had a beautifully clear day with hardly any wind. Temperatures were cold and there was a sharp frost, 16.9 degrees, last night. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 44.1 and 24.6 degrees, the minimum on the grass being 15.1 degrees. The sky this morning was again clear.

The frosty morning in Dunedin was followed by a sunny day with a very light southerly breeze. This morning, however, it was cloudy and calm.
