MANNERS IN TRAINS

CHILDREN WHO SIT TIGHT

Comment on the actions and behaviour of secondary school pupils who regularly travel by'train to the city was expressed at the rrionthly meeting of the Ngaio Progressive Association last evening.

The chairman, Mr. H. L. Cummings, said that in the past the 300-odd secondary school pupils who travelled from Johnsonville, Khandailah, and Ngaio by train had usually been carried in carriages of their own. Now, with the inauguration of the electric trains, they had to travel in the public compartments, and regular travellers were treated with the spectacle of nearly all the pupils seated while adults and elderly people remained standing. The pupils were also very noisy, Mr. Cummings said.

3\sr. R. Irving said he had caught the morning trains regularly for some days, but he had not seen anything out of the ordinary. The.behaviour of the pupils was good, and the only thing he had noticed was that some of them were loath to give up their seats.

Mr. E. Turksma said that he would like it pointed out that only a small proportion of children were not observing common courtesy.

Mr. O. Gidall suggested that the members of the association should observe the actions of pupils for about a month before taking action.

Mr. S. Clothier considered that if the pupils had to travel with the public they might become better disciplined as a result.

It was decided to investigate the position in a month's time.
