BOWLING DIGNITY

THE MATTER OF DRESS

RULE FOR TOURNAMENTS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, % July 7,

Any bowler who turns out for play in Dominion or centre tournaments in any dress other than approved bowling costume will not in future be allowed to play. Grey "slacks" and waistcoats and sartorial comforts affected by careless followers of the game will be effectively discouraged from lowering the dignity of bowls. • ■

This decision was arrived at when the annual meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Bowling Association dealt with amendments to the rules and constitution of the game.

Mr. H. B. Oakey (Christchurch) asked what penalty was intended when players wore "greys." There were so many shades of that colour that there should be a ruling.

Voices: Throw them out. Don't let them play bowls.

Mr. M. J. Casey (Wellington) argued that it would be too drastic to enforce the debarment rule on wet days.

"We must be drastic in framing a rule on this point," said Mr. G. A. Nelson (Dunedin). "If we let 'greys' creep in it will be no good. It is only right! that we should wear 'whites' or 'creams' and^ the proper costume. We must have a bit of dignity in our game. ' ;•,.-. There was a chorus of "Hear, hear." Mrv W. Connor (Dunedin) said orice a rule was made definite an umpire would, of course, be able to use his discretion in cases" of wet weather. A motion moved by Mr. G. A. Nelson (Dunedin) that ..in all Dominion and centre"* tournaments > competitors be not permitted to play unless attired in approved bowling.costume, was carried. The rule does not apply, to club or inter-club games. It was" decided to institute a new rule under which, in the event of a tie in a game where a head or: heads had to be played, the right for throw of the jack should be decided by a toss of the coin. The .executive of the New Zealand Council for the year will consist of Auckland members of the council and Mr. P. H. Rowe, South Auckland councillor. ,
