A DOUBLE BREAK

OUTDOOR GAMES

DIFFICULT REPAIRS

(From "Tha Post's" Representative.)

VANCOUVER, June 8.

For the first time in its 35 years of life, the Trans-Pacific cable broke in two places—between Honolulu and Midway, and between Midway . and Guam. The company's cable ships and the Pan-American clipper planes co-operated in a stirring drama against sea and rough weather to find the broken cable. The double break, beside completely isolating Midway, made the repairs extremely difficult. ■ The approximate position of the first break was determined by resistance tests, and the Cable Company's steamer Dickinson was dispatched from Honolulu to the scene. She immediately ran into a heavy storm, which continued for some time. She ran out of fuel before reaching Midway, and was forced to^. seek refuge on the leeward side of Margo Reef, from which she had to be towed back to Honolulu.

The cable repair ship Restorer was rushed from Vancouver. In the meantime, the second break was discovered, between Midway and Guam. Midway was now completely isolated. PanAmerican Airways stepped into the breach. Reports on the search for the lost cable, advice for the repair crews, and information on tests were flashed across the Pacific, between the Airways' stations. Midway's cup of misfortune brimmed over when the deepsea launch broke down, and the islanders were without means of communicating with the Restorer at her offshore anchorage. The Airways launch was commissioned, and the mail was transferred on the open sea to the Restorer by bucket. After nearly two months of Herculean effort, in which stormy weather held almost continuously, service was restored on the Honolulu-Midway section of the cable. It was not until three weeks.later that repair was completed on the Midway-Guam sector, and through cable communication was once more resumed on 9000-mile cable.

I MELANESIAN MISSION i APPEAL AT ANNUAL MEETING (From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, June 18. An appeal for young people to enlist in the Melanesian Mission was made by the Rev. C. C. Harper when he presided at the annual meeting this week. The present workers were all growing older, he said, and it was becoming increasingly necessary that younger people should., join the mission and be trained. :.-••■ The mission consisted of 21 European men and 25 European women, assisted by 48 native clergy, he continued. In the last ten years the number of native clergy had doubled, with the happy, result that the work was today not so I much a mission to natives but a diocese largely worked by natives. There were 128 brothers in training and several sisters. A new departure was the i medical training being given to three : Melanesians at the Suva Medical School.

Finance was fairly^ satisfactory for the present time. The mission was in a better position at this stage of the year than it had been for two or three years previously. Sonie people were often distressed that the mission incurred debts at certain periods, but the work, which covered an area of the size of France, Belgium, Holland, and Spain, had to go on.

It was difficult to run without incurring expenses, and there were many obstacles to contend with. "One of these was the heavy taxation imposed by the New Zealand Government, which was of the "very socialistic type" and regarded the mission as absentee landlords. .

The Rev. A. E. Corner, general secretary, said that the mission's income had not been sufficient to meet expenditure, and subsequently a debt had mounted. An appeal was made last October, and the result to date was £2828 16s lOd, together with an increase in subscriptions of £.220, which was very satisfactory. During the coming year a film of the islands was to be taken and would be .shown -in England. Addresses were given by the Provost of Derby: (the Very Rev. P. A. Micklem), Mrs. Sprott (Meringe Lagoon), the Rev. A. Mason (of.Fiu, N. Mala), and Mother Margaret (Community of the Cross). :

The Lord Bishop oi Exeter, who was to have taken the chair, was unable to be present. It was announced that the bishop regretted that he would have to relinquish the chairmanship of the mission at the end of the year.
