LUSTRAL DOES HIS PART

The change of luck that was started by Matoru was continued by Lustral, who stayed on best of the Highweight Handicap field. Never further back than fourth or fifth, he came through along the inner at the false rail to assume control, and, after beginning to stop at the distance, he raised another effort and hung on to score by a length. Lustral and Matoru were purchased together from Mrs. D. Levin by Mr. T. Fisher, of Upper Hutt, and the Trentham trainer T. R. George, only six weeks ago for a price understood to be round about £500, including contingencies, and Lustral's share of the joint cost was a good deal more than that given for Matoru, as it is considered that he has bright future prospects as a jumper. This was his first win in four starts in his new colours, and he and Matoru have now more than paid the outlay to secure them both.

Lustral is only a young horse yet, being a four-year-old gelding by Tidal from the Lord Quex—Asterina mare Asterism, a half-sister to the useful Asturisea and the.dam also of the promising steeplechaser Power Chief. He was bred by Mr. G. D. Beatson. He has the distinction of having started more times this season than any other horse, arid he has won five of his races. flowed Iddo most of the way, and when Lustral went through in the straight he threw out a likely challenge, but Lustral was capable of holding him at bay. It was his best recent effort. Settlement was a close third, coming on again over the concluding stages after having looked a beaten horse when failing to handle the ground on the turn. In the early stages he was lying alongside Lustral, but he lost his place near the half-mile. The rest were well beaten. Iddo, after setting most of the pace, weakened into fourth about six lengths away. Curie moved up on the home turn to third, but also tired. Kilberis and Raroa were others.handy at the straight who faded. Chat was .badly placed early but made up some leeway over the last two furlongs. Taumau ran just fairly, but neither Entheos nor Sky Pilot was ever a possibility.
