NEW GRANDSTAND

PETONE OVAL

£10,000 LOAN PROPOSAL

Plans for providing an up-to-date grandstand on the Recreation Ground have been considered recently by Ihe Petone Borough Council, and at a special meeting this week it was decided to approach the Local Government Loans Board with a view to placing a proposal before the ratepayers to borrow £10,000 for the purpose of building a new grandstand in place of the present stand, and to make alterations to the cycle track so as to permit the Rugby ground to be laid out north and south.

The council had before it for consideration two types of structures, single-storey and double-storey, and it was found that the donble-storeyed structure was necessary to give complete satisfaction as far as the angles of visibility were concerned. This, together with the increased building costs, was responsible for the increased price compared with the one previously before the ratepayers.

The proposed stand will be constructed with reinforced concrete with up-to-date accommodation for players, referees, anc^ the St. John Ambulance. It will seat 1344 people and also contain two club rooms.

Although the loan is to be secured by a special rate, it is not anticipated that this rate will be levied, as the money collected by way of revenue should be nearly sufficient to offset the interest and loan redemption charges.

A sketch plan of the structure will be on view in the Gas Board's window in the course of the next few days. Any person objecting to the proposed application -is called upon to submit his objection in writing to the council before its meeting on July 25.

The new stand will be built parallel with the western .boundary of the ground and between the site of the former rotunda and Kirk's Avenue entrance. The centre of the stand will correspond with the centre of the new lay-out of the Oval,
