GERMANS ABROAD
THEIR ROLE IN HISTORY
•A history book for children of German origin living in America which "will emphasise the enormous share which German blood, German courage, and. German work has had in the development-of America" -is demanded in the periodical "Nazi Education," writes Sigrid Schultz from Berlin to the "Chicago Tribune." It is the offl'cial organ of the Nazi Teachers' Union in Berlin and gives directions to all teachers, governesses, and persons disseminating "kulfur" in Germany and throughout the world. "The part played by Germans in American history is so great that by' teaching American history with emphasis on the deeds of Germans, the realisation of German-Americanism could be firmly anchored in the children," the magazine said. "There is no history book in America which gives just notice to Germany's share in the development of the country. To create such a history is for our historians not only a beautiful task but a pressing necessity." "Nazi Education" gives as examples such men as Baron Steuben, who trained, America's troops in the revolution; Carl Schurz, the trusted adviser of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, and Martin Waldseemueller, "the German geographer who on his map of the world in 1597 first gave the New World the name of America, after Amerigo Vespucci, who accompanied Columbus on his voyage of discovery." The periodical "further advocates "that the German language be reserved" among young Germans in America by first instructing theni in the language of their fatherland. "To avoid one-sided education," it states "the history lessons should be Ger-man-American, so that the children growing up will be German-Ameri-cans* - - — —
