V.M.C.A. LADIES' "AT HOME"

Nearly a hundred women attended the Hutt Valley V.M.C.A. rooms at tha invitation of the ladies' auxiliary of the local branch yesterday .afternoon when a delightful programme of musical and dramatic items was presented by visiting artists. The setting of the ' stage was particularly attractive, shallow bowls of graceful Iceland poppies being placed between stands lof pussy-willow and. birch foliage while tall jardinieres of hydrangeas in deep tones flanked either wing. The president, Mrs. C. G. Hedge, jvelcomed the guests and introduced each performer in turn, the presentations being as follows:—Trio, Mrs. W. H. Phillips, Mrs, Wells, and Mrs. McCallum; solos, Mrs! Liebezeit and Mrs. Phillips;, elocutionary items. Mrs. Hugh' Lowe; and part songs, Petone League Mothers' choir. An original competition organised by Mrs. Lopdell was won after a close contest by Mrs. Porter and Mrs. McEwenl Later, tea, with its fresh and dainty accompaniments, was much appreciated on such a wintry afternoon. A clever reading of the play "In These Hard Times" followed, those taking part :being Mesdames H. Lowe McCallum, and Nichol, and Misses Findlay and Kersiey. A vote of thanks to the performers proposed by Mrs. H. W. Kersiey was warmly seconded by the audience. -■ Plunket Society Party. Mrs. F. Lonsdale entertained about fifty guests at her home\ in Hinau Street, Lower Hutt, on Wednesday afternoon for the benefit of the Plunket Society of Lower Hutt. Many of her visitors motored out from Wellington, and the time passed rapidly in ' the enjoyment of ingenious competitions and amusing games. The reception rooms were charmingly decorated with spring flowers, and a 'delicious afternoon tea was served from a buffet table, - - " ' v Evening of Bridge. A cheery company of bridge players assembled in the Plunket.. .Rooms, Lower Hutt,-last night at-a p?.rty organised for the society by Mrs. Walter Nash, Mrs. F. M. Renner, and Mrs. A". A. Davies. Mrs. Nash's-gown was of cigar brown flat crepe worn with a velvet coat; Mrs. Renner wore vieux rose slipper satin with accessories to tone; and Mrs. A. A. Da'vies's frock was of love-in-a-mist blue crepe-suede.* Mrs. J. W. Andrews (president of the '' branch) and Mrs. E. Cameron were' among those present. Piping-hot coffee and tempting home-made delicacies were served from a buffet in an adjoining room, which was charmingly decorated with jonquils and feathery asparagus fern with napery in shades to tone. The players included Mesdames J. Rusden Salt, C, J. Ashton, F. Lonsdale, F. Craven, E. D. Harland, H. J. .Flux, W. L. Hooson, Pi Taylor, T. Whiteman, O. Scott, N. Beasley, W. Eamshaw, A..E. DennisJ C. Holford, H. Pool, J. Passmore, J, W. Mackissack, C. Wiggins, T. A. Fletcher, F. Mac Donald, J. Mitchell, A. Wright, K. K. Watts, A. G. Butchers, H. Maunder, J. M. Power, M. .Macaskill, K. Wiggins, I. Meek, C. J. Butt, H, Admore, W. Corbett, E. Foster, P. M. Fookes, and the Misses O. Mitchell and A. Hogg. The prize for contract went to. Mrs. Flux, that for auction to Mrs. Whiteman, the hidden number to Mrs. E. Harland, and the low field to Mrs, F. Craven.
